Getting to Istanbul – your options

Riding from Europe: Istanbul is reachable from anywhere in Europe in roughly a week at a relaxed pace. We provide complete GPS routes and a step-by-step border crossing guide. Shipping your motorcycle to Hungary and riding the remaining four days is a popular alternative.

Prefer to fly? Multiple budget airlines serve Istanbul directly with quality rental motorcycles available at the destination. Thessaloniki in Greece is also an excellent fly-in option with rental bikes on-site.

Helmets on. We roll out of Istanbul and chase the Black Sea coast east, the water glittering on our left as Turkey’s wild interior waits ahead. Then we turn inland, and everything changes.

The roads climb. The villages shrink. The landscape turns raw and dramatic, and eventually we arrive at the reason this route exists: the Dark Canyon. Known locally as Karanlık Kanyon, this is a limestone gorge so narrow that the road passes through a natural tunnel carved directly through solid rock. The walls close in, light disappears briefly, then explodes back. It is one of Turkey’s most spectacular motorcycle roads and almost entirely unknown to international riders. You will not find it on any mainstream motorcycle app.

Optional gravel sections through the canyon are available for those who want the full adventure bike experience. Clean tarmac alternatives exist for every section.

Then Cappadocia. The landscape turns alien, you will see fairy chimneys, cave hotels, volcanic rock formations unlike anything in Europe. Before dawn on one of our mornings here, we lift off above it all on a sunrise hot air balloon flight, included in your package price. One of the most extraordinary moments in any SFB tour.

Ride: Black Sea coastal roads into mountain passes, through the Dark Canyon gorge, and on to Cappadocia.

Most European riders never get here. That is exactly the point.
Central Turkey is not on the tourist map, and the roads reflect it, long, empty, and entirely ours. We roll across the Anatolian plateau as the landscape opens into something vast and ancient, the kind of riding where you feel genuinely far from home in the best possible way.

Then the mountains give way and the Mediterranean coast appears below us. The temperature climbs, the air turns salty, and Pamukkale’s famous white thermal terraces emerge naturally along the route. We park the bikes, pull off the boots, and soak. It is earned.

Ride: Anatolian plateau roads through mountain passes and down to the Mediterranean coast.

We turn north, and naturally we do it in style. Western Turkey’s finest twisty roads carry us back toward the Bosphorus at a pace that does justice to everything that came before. Before long the vast skyline of Istanbul appears on the horizon, closing one of the great motorcycle loops in Europe.

Riders on rental bikes return their machines to the Istanbul depot. Riders on their own motorcycles have excellent onward options — ride home through the Balkans, take a ferry from Izmir across to Greece, or leave the bike in secure indoor storage near Athens from €25 per month and fly home. Motorcycle freight back to Northern Europe from Hungary or Italy is also easy to arrange. We handle it all.

Ride: Western Turkey highland roads back to Istanbul. Fast, scenic, and deeply satisfying.

The bikes are parked. The helmets come off for the last time, and Istanbul takes over. We spend our final evening in one of the world’s great cities and we enjoy the Bosphorus at sunset, a last Turkish dinner, and the particular satisfaction of a rider who has just crossed two continents.

Rental motorcycles are returned today. Riders on their own bikes sort their onward plans with Juha’s full support

Ride: Istanbul is yours.

Today we say our goodbyes. Breakfast, high-fives, and the quiet satisfaction of 3,500 kilometres well ridden. You leave Turkey with a full camera, a full soul, and a very long list of roads you want to come back for.

For those heading back to Scandinavia or Northern Europe in late October, autumn will already be waiting. Secure indoor winter storage is available in Greece, Italy, and Hungary from €25 per month. Motorcycle freight home from Hungary or Italy is straightforward and we are happy to organise it on your behalf.

Ride: 0 km. Farewells, transfers, and departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

In general, a standard EU/UK motorcycle license is accepted in Turkey and in some countries on the way here. However, if your license is from outside Europe (e.g. USA, Canada, Australia), we strongly recommend obtaining an international license just to be on the safe side.

Note: We always verify your documents before the trip.

You don’t need to be a Dakar Rally expert, but this tour is not for beginners. You must be at least 25 years old and have held a valid category A motorcycle license for at least four years. You should be able to handle a large adventure bike (such as a BMW GS or Yamaha Tenere) with complete comfort on narrow, winding mountain roads and varying asphalt conditions. We will ride at a reasonable and safe pace, but solid riding skills are required to truly enjoy your Turkey trip

Absolutely. Turkish people are very friendly and hospitable. The locals love motorcyclists! Traffic can be a bit more “creative” than in Northern Europe, but that’s why you have an experienced tour guide. We will guide you safely through the traffic so you can enjoy the scenery. Our accommodation and parking are chosen so that you and your bike are as safe as possible even at night, although even then there is nothing different from winter.

We recommend bringing your own reliable riding gear. The weather can change quickly, it can be hot in the valleys (+25 °C) and cool in the mountains (+0 °C).
Required equipment: A good quality helmet, a protective jacket/pants (mesh/ventilated) that are good for the heat, sturdy boots and gloves.
Rain: Always bring a waterproof layer or rain suit. We ride rain or shine!

Yes, absolutely! This route is also paved if you wish and is very suitable for two-person travel. If you are used to riding with a passenger, the unpaved sections are also suitable for riding with a passenger. The price for one passenger is lower, and you will share a double room (no single supplement).

Since we take care of the hotels, any tolls, your daily expenses are mostly limited to snacks, souvenirs, drinks and tips if you wish. Credit cards are working well in Turkey and you can also exchange local currency on the trip if necessary.
